Placement opportunity – part of programme kickstarting young people’s environment careers
At Bristol Climate & Nature Partnership, we’re delighted to be offering a placement as part of Youth Environmental Service (YES), a new programme that gives young people the opportunity to spend a year doing paid environmental work.
These 12-month, paid, entry-level placements at environmental organisations across Bristol and the West of England will help a new generation gain the skills, confidence, and connections to build impactful careers, all whilst helping to protect and restore our environment.
Nearly 1 million young people across the UK are out of employment, education or training, and those from marginalised communities often face additional barriers to accessing training and entry-level opportunities. Pathways into environmental careers can be especially hard to access, with many young people feeling locked out unless they can afford to do unpaid work. YES Bristol aims to break down these barriers into the sector and create exciting, meaningful opportunities for young people to get their foot in the door.
We, alongside local organisations like City to Sea and Bath and West Community Energy, are just some of those hosting placements. Young people will have the opportunity to apply for a variety of roles, whether they want to get hands-on, inspire others, or use their creativity to drive change.
All of the roles are completely entry-level and paid at the Real Living Wage. The application process is designed to prioritise passion and interest over experience and qualifications, and the programme is actively encouraging applications from young people from underrepresented backgrounds – including those from ethnic minority communities, people living with disabilities, and those from low-income backgrounds.
Alongside trainees’ on-the-job learning, they’ll have access to regular 1-2-1 sessions with a dedicated youth coach, a peer-support group of other trainees working in the region, and a learning programme aimed at building the soft skills they’ll need to thrive, in their role and looking ahead to build an environmental career.
“Too many young people care deeply about the environment but are locked out of the very roles where they could make a difference. YES Bristol is about changing that. It’s a practical, purposeful step towards a more inclusive and fairer environmental sector where talent, passion and potential matter more than privilege.
These paid, entry-level roles will open doors, build confidence, and help a new generation start their careers while making a real impact in their communities and for the planet.”
