Future Bristol – a guide to the city
Mission Net Zero is a multi-partner Innovate UK funded project led by Bristol City Council. Bristol Climate & Nature Partnership are collaborating on this project to reduce the region’s carbon emissions by addressing some of the barriers to progress such as a lack of investment and not enough people trained in retrofit skills. This new interactive illustration helps people explore the issues and solutions Mission Net Zero is progressing in Bristol today.
Mission Net Zero is an innovative and wide-ranging project that recognises that many of the solutions for a low-carbon city are not just technological, but rooted in community. The project worked with three community organisations who have developed community climate action plans. They built on the local priorities they identified through this process, and the knowledge and skills in their neighbourhoods, to design energy projects that meet local needs. Other project partners worked with education providers to develop new training pathways and qualifications. Others fed in to the development of local investment and regional growth plans that centre fairness and equality of access.
On the illustration, you will find community priorities complemented by citywide action and new investment, underpinned by greater understanding of the benefits of moving away from fossil energy, restoring nature and working together as neighbours. This illustration was adapted from a version produced for Bristol Climate & Nature Partnership in 2019 by Bristol artist Andy Council, to represent some of the ambitions of the One City Plan refresh that took place that year. The vision it captures is one of neighbourhoods where people and nature thrive, and where new technologies are implemented and new skills gained in a way that makes our city fairer, enabling everyone to benefit from the transition.
