The Birch Collective: from campfire to career
The Birch Collective are a social enterprise dedicated to helping young people connect with nature and each other. In this blog, James Broadley, their Marketing Communications Coordinator, shares how Camp Birch empowered Jenny’s career journey.
This summer, The Birch Collective hosted Camp Birch 2024, a free, 5-day residential camp for 18-25-year-olds at the beautiful Moor Barton Wilding site in Dartmoor. The camp provided an opportunity for young adults to immerse themselves in nature, build confidence, and discover new paths through hands-on activities and mentorship. For Jenny, this experience was transformative, unlocking her potential and inspiring her to pursue a career as an Outdoor Adventure Leader.
Jenny’s journey
When Jenny joined Camp Birch, she was looking for direction. “I’ve always felt at home in nature, but didn’t know how to make it a career,” she shared. At the camp, Jenny thrived, learning fire-lighting, foraging, and enjoying reflective moments in nature. She continued her journey with Fresh Air Thursdays, The Birch Collective’s weekly land-skills and wellbeing group, which allowed her to further develop her skills and connect with a supportive community.
With guidance from The Birch Collective’s team, Jenny decided to train as an Outdoor Adventure Leader. “Camp Birch gave me the space to reconnect with myself and the confidence to pursue a meaningful career in nature,” she said.
The power of nature and support
Jenny’s story highlights the lasting impact of nature-based experiences and mentorship. Camp Birch is not just a one-time event—it’s a foundation for growth, with ongoing support like Fresh Air Thursdays. These programmes help participants build resilience, deepen their connection with nature, and explore their potential.
Held at Moor Barton in Dartmoor, the Camp Birch 2024 connected participants with an ecological restoration site. Activities included whittling, weaving, and cooking over an open fire, alongside reflective group time. Everything from meals to equipment was provided, ensuring inclusivity.
Looking ahead
The Birch Collective envisions a society where nature connection and community support drive well-being. Initiatives like Camp Birch address youth isolation and inspire action.
