Launching Capsule: a short film on a just transition
As part of our Community Climate Action Project, the Partnership commissioned film-maker Euella Jackson to creatively explore the theme of just transition. Today we’re launching her short films Capsule, and the making of Capsule.
Euella is an award-winning presenter, film-maker and creative producer based in Bristol, as well as Co-Director at Rising Arts Agency. She worked with a team of young creatives to write and direct Capsule, a heartwarming story that explores the relationship between tackling climate issues and social issues to create a hopeful future for everyone. It looks at the concept of a just transition through the bond between a child and their grandparent and delves into our collective responsibility to each other, while capturing the power of dreams.
Making of
To develop the film, Euella held community engagement events and conducted interviews to help understand what a just transition meant to others. These highlighted the importance of connection and conversation for sparking action, however small.
Both the supper club and games night brought people together in a fun way over good food, and influenced the development of Capsule. Euella asked people about the good things they wanted to keep going forward, a lot of people said fun, joy, and community connection.
Amy Harrison, Head of Community Partnerships at Bristol Climate & Nature Partnership says “We’re delighted with the work Euella and her team have produced. Capsule is an engaging film that touches on many of the complex themes of a just transition whilst bringing it back to positivity, hope and community.”
Creativity and climate
The creative commission aimed to help make the theme of just transition more accessible and relatable to a broad audience. Creativity has an important role in helping make conversations around climate more relevant to people and their lives.
Euella hopes that people viewing Capsule will feel more connected with the people around them and recognise the potential we all have to influence and inspire each other.
“The power of community is amazing. It’s such a valuable resource but can be hard to communicate. We often deny ourselves the joy and pleasure of being alive and a just transition is also about that – and the sharing, and the mutual aid and those things that make you feel like you belong. Be curious about the people in your community, you never know what action a conversation will spark!” Euella Jackson

Euella wanted to emphasise the importance of dreams for a just transition – dreams for your family, for your future. What dreams for a just transition does Capsule spark for you? What future Bristol can we collectively dream?
